Away We Go!

August 21, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Hello!

So today Rob and I are off on an adventure! Hoorah!

We are going on a roadtrip right across Canada! All the way to Prince Edward Island. Nearly 5,000km.

My parents just recently retired back there, and nearly my entire family lives there, so it’s time Rob met them all! The trip is going to be one week of driving, one week of visiting, and then flying home. I couldn’t think of a more perfect roadtrip! It’s going to be an incredible time, I already know it :)

We might get a chance to update this blog, not quite sure yet! But if you want to follow along you can either friend me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter. I should be posting a fair bit there, and possibly asking for advice along the way! :) We have no plans at all, no schedule, and no route. That’s what I call an adventure!!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Tons of love,

Lauren :)

Fall Sessions // Promo

July 19, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Well, it’s that time of year! As much as you might want to plug your ears, close your eyes real tight, and sing “Tralalala”, you can’t escape the fact that we’re over half way through the summer. Gasp!

That means for us we’re looking towards the fall and getting booked up for the last few outdoor sessions of the year!

And just so it’s not such a hard pill to swallow, we’re having a sweet promo! Yay! Ready?

Book a portrait session with Rob & Lauren this fall (September & a wee bit of October) and you’ll receive one complimentary set of Notecards!

Note: We only have a handful of slots left, so contact us right away if you’re interested in some super fun custom artwork and we’ll hit you up with more details!

What are Notecards?” you are asking (I know because I can hear you…). Let me show and tell you!

First up, what’s your favourite thing to see in the mailbox when you check it? It’s certainly not bills (yuck). It’s a piece of personal, handwritten mail! We want to encourage a return to handwritten notes to let your friends and family know you’re thinking of them! What would be a more wonderful and thoughtful little gesture?

Well, if you had a gorgeous Notecard with stunning images of yourself on it, that would be extra cool! We’ve been creating custom Notecards for our clients for a while now, and wanted to share how nifty they are! Check out these two recent designs:

Birth Announcements A beautiful way to announce the arrival of a new addition!

Family Notecards These bad boys are perfect for any occasion! We can also add a holiday flair and you’re all set for the best holiday cards ever!

So, we think those are pretty snazzy, and all sessions for the fall will be getting a complimentary set to show off their beautiful new photos! Cool, right? Not cool enough, we want to have a bigger promo than just that….

Moving Portraits

You’ve likely seen all of Rob’s stunning Moving Portraits he’s been posting lately. We really feel that they capture something a bit more than stills alone, and have been loving creating these unique pieces for our clients. To sweeten the deal….

All Moving Portraits are 50% off for new fall sessions!!!!

I know, we spoil you guys. That’s ok, we just love shooting, and want to make sure we can connect with as many wonderful people before the snow hits!

Here are a couple recent Moving Portraits to jog your memory:

If that all sounds pretty neat to you, and you’d like to get more details, or set up a portrait session, just drop us a line and we’ll chat!

Hope you’re all having a wonderful day, fingers crossed that the sun decides to return in force to Edmonton!

One Website To Rule Them All

June 14, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Today I am announcing a new website. (Click here if you just wanna see it, and skip my ramblings :)

Yes. It’s ridiculous.

If you’ve followed us for a while you’ll know that I seem to make that announcement every couple of months. Rob and I just have a lot of things we love to do! We love to create portraits, travel, teach, shoot personal work, we adore being involved in FotoJournal, and we just don’t want to give any of those things up! The result is that there are a LOT of websites that our work is now spread across.

We’re cool with things being that way, to separate what we do both in the web and in our minds, but I think it’s been hard for anyone just finding us to know what we’re about.

So Rob gave me a task. Create a portal. (You can call it a splash page, I’m going to call it a portal because it sounds mystical). I have a small amount of HTML and CSS knowledge, and have been learning a little bit here and there over the past year, but have never made a full website with them.

Well, I gave myself the job to do it over the weekend. I spent some time brainstorming, made a design in Photoshop, then yesterday I sat down, learned myself some VERY basic HTML and CSS, and made a website. I’m super duper proud of that, even though I know it’s honestly the most simple website in the history of the world. What’s neat is that I actually made it, completely by hand, and it turned out exactly as I had planned. Yay! (P.S. I’m not trying to brag, just showing that you can seriously do anything you put your mind to!)

Anyway, that’s way too big of a buildup for the actual site, and now you’re going to go there and be like “What’s the big deal?” but I’ll still share it with you :)

From henceforth, we will keep our projects neatly arranged at: http://www.robnlauren.com

So go check it out, and explore our little world!

Hope everyone had a super lovely weekend! Looking forward to sharing some portraits with you this week!!

Upcoming Interview with Get Totally Rad!

June 1, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

photo#photo_2953

It was quite a surprising moment when I received an email from Kristen, Minister of Muggle Relations at Totally Rad Actions. (Yes. That’s her official title. What?) If you’re a photographer I’m quite sure you’ve heard of Totally Rad Actions, as they are probably the most popular actions of all time. I use A Better Web Sharpen on every single image I ever put online. Doug knows what he’s doing.

Anyway, somehow she heard about the two of us up here in the frozen north, and wanted to interview us. I’m still not quite sure what possessed her to contact us, but we couldn’t be more honoured!

As I’m fairly known for talking a LOT I’ve given Rob carte blanche to use whatever means necessary to physically stop me from speaking if I start to embarrass myself. But we all know he won’t be able to completely stop me ;)

So this Thursday, June 3, at noon MST we will be chatting with her for an hour! EEP! That’s an awful lot of time for me to make a fool of myself, so I encourage you to tune in and get your chuckles in for the day! At least I think you can tune in?

The link for the interview is here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gettotallyrad/2010/06/03/interview-rob-lauren

Don’t worry if you miss it though, or can’t tune in live. You’ll be able to listen at any time and there will be a little post about it on the Totally Rad blog! Woo woo!

Canadian Roadtrip Workshops!!

May 3, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Yep, it’s huge! We’ve been getting tons of emails asking when the next Chill Session would be. And we fully expected to just keep doing what we’ve always done, and hold an awesome workshop here in Edmonton. But then, we thought to ourselves: What if we do more? What if we go big? What if we hit the road, and travel to those photographers who weren’t able to come out to Edmonton? What if we ROADTRIP!!!

photo#photo_2891

And, in the spirit of Photography Concentrate, we’re making it affordable, chock full of concentrated, high quality information, and a ton of fun to boot.

If you’ve been wanting to hit up one of our workshops, this is definitely the one to be a part of! It’s TWO days, so even more information, and will be filled up with all the knowledge that we can possibly cram in. It’s going to blow minds.

We really hope you’ll join us! Check this page out for all the details.

P.S. We’re shooting super special portrait sessions in each city! So if you wanted Rob & Lauren portraits, this is a SWEET opportunity! Deets here

And get ready, because this blog is heading back into high gear with a bunch of really fantastic shoots coming up! So much going on, I hope you can handle it!

Another New Project for Us.

April 19, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

(First up, I want to apologize for neglecting this blog so badly! That will not be a trend that I intend to maintain, and will be posting regularly very soon! Rob and I were up to our eyeballs in this project and everything else was put on the side burner! But we’ve launched it, and are now attempting to restore balance and order in our universe :)

It seems like I say that we have a new project every month now. We just can’t seem to stop ourselves from trying out new things, and expanding our business & art in ways we never expected. Exhausting, stressful, but oh so fun! ;)

This latest project has really set a fire in us. It has to do with something we’re incredibly passionate about: education.

Being self-taught photographers ourselves, we know exactly how long it takes to learn the technical and artsy stuff about photography. Then how long it takes to learn how to start a photography business. And then, just when you think you’ve figured it all out, there’s the incredible amount of time it takes to learn how to run a successful photography business.  And the crazy thing? Learning those things NEVER stops. We learn more every day. And much of that learning comes from the many mistakes and misteps we’ve taken along the way. We really hope, through teaching, to help others avoid those mistakes!!

So what to do with all this passion for education? We’ve been holding Chill Sessions for the past few years, and have enjoyed sharing with some of the most wonderful photographers you could hope to meet. We also starting doing one-on-one coaching this year, and have been able to help a ton of great people! But it was all local. Not easy to share.

photo#photo_2882

Enter Photography Concentrate. A new website dedicated to sharing real-world photography knowledge. We’re kicking it off with  a video tutorial all about RAW Processing in Lightroom. If you’re not using that program to do most of your processing, you’re missing out! It’s incredible. Even if you’re a hobbyist just starting to learn about processing, this tutorial will be awesome for you!

What’s really awesome is that this is just the beginning. We have a TON of things planned for that site over the coming months. So if you’re photographer (pro or passionate amateur!) we’d love for you to check it out!

photo#photo_2883

There’s a second part to this announcement. And it’s a big one. One that I’ve been procrastinating writing for hours now. But I suppose I just need to jump in with both feet here.

Rob and I have made the very very difficult decision not to take any weddings for 2011.

I could probably write a novel about the reasoning for that decision. But to really boil it down, we believe that life is best lived charging after your dreams. Our dream, from day one, has always been to become travel photographers. Weddings casually strolled into our lives, and before we knew it they completely took over. We couldn’t do near as much traveling as we’d like, since our schedule was determined a year and a half in advance!

But there’s no need to belabour the reasons. Needless to say, we’re very sad that we won’t be getting to meet new brides and grooms, and share their wonderful journey with them, but we know we’re leaving the Edmonton wedding photography market in very capable hands. There are some wonderful shooters here :)

This doesn’t mean that things stop on this blog. Hardly! We have some wonderfully amazing weddings this year that we are just so excited about. And we are planning to really expand the portrait side of our work this year, so there will be a lot of images yet to come!

It’s going to be an interesting journey from here on out for us. We’re leaving a business we know very well, to pursue one that we know hardly anything about. But that’s never stopped us in the past, and it certainly won’t stop us now. It only takes a heart full of passion and the dedication to work relentlessly to make your dream a reality. That’s something we believe in absolutely.

So, I hope you’ll all join us on the adventure our lives are sure to become! We have been thinking BIG a lot recently, and have some wacky ideas for our future. It will be scary, for sure, but I have a feeling this new path will take us some incredible places.

Tons of love, and truly, thank you for reading our blog.

Rob & Lauren :)

FotoJournal: Blogs for Photographers

March 29, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Well, you may have heard us talking about FotoJournal for some time now, and wondered what the heck that was all about? Strap yourself in, cuz this here is an official announcement.

After over 1.5 years of insanely hard work, FotoJournal, a brand new blogging platform designed from the ground up specifically for photographers, has been released to the public

photo#photo_2879

Now, the next question I’m sure you have, is “Why are Rob & Lauren announcing this? Did they make FotoJournal?”

Short answer: We were recently asked to join the two extremely talented guys who created FotoJournal and help them from a customer service/advisory capacity. They did all the heavy lifting (read: coding!), and built this platform from the ground up, we are just lucky to get to help them spread the word!

Why are we telling you this? Well, even though it might be a bit boring, we very strongly believe in transparency in our business. For a long time we were always talking about how amazing FotoJournal is, and recommending it, since we got to use it from the beginning. We were just very happy customers, and wanted to share a great new product that we used. Now that we are officially part of the business, we of course have a vested interest in it, and want people to be aware of that.

With all that being said, the reason we’re a part of this adventure is because we honestly believe FotoJournal is an incredible product, and has made our blogging lives so much easier. If you are a blogger, but don’t want to spend $2,000+ to have a nice looking blog, you should really check it out. It has a totally custom theme editor so that you can change the look of your blog without knowing any code. If you like to post lots of photos, but are sick of how difficult that is in all the existing blogging platforms, you should check it out. And hey, there’s a free account, so everyone should just check it out!! It honestly does make blogging slick, sexy and fun! Even if you’re a hobbyist photographer, this is a fantastic way for you to show off your work, and share it with friends and family.

Head over here to sign up for free! http://myfotojournal.com

Here’s a little screenshot of me uploading some photos to blog. One of my favourite parts about FotoJournal? Once these are all done uploading, I can put them all neatly into a post with one click! Sweeeet! There are about a million other amazing things about it, but I’ll let you check it out to discover them all.

photo#photo_2877

Now, it’s Monday, so you might be bored and want the whole backstory. I’ll let you know how this whole thing came about, which is a pretty neat tale!

Back in 2007 Rob and I came up with the idea of The Wedding Travelers. We wanted to travel to India and shoot a couple weddings there. And we wanted to blog about it. We’d used Blogger, and then got fed up, switched to Wordpress, and were still frustrated. All of those platforms were built for normal bloggers, not photo bloggers, so trying to get lots of photos up there was taking way too long. We also wanted a custom blog, and had received quotes well over the $2,000 mark. That was simply way too much for us, especially since those blogs were still created with the old, non-photo centric blogging platforms. “There MUST be a better way!”, we lamented.

Enter Jon Smelquist. He and his then-fiancee-now-wife came in and met with us about wedding photography. We got chatting, and learned that he actually knew how to build blogs! Truly a fortuitous coincidence! We asked if he would make one for The Wedding Travelers, and he agreed!

He built the back end (the part you log into and do all the work from) from scratch, and we loved it. We talked a lot to him about the lack of affordable and easy-to-use solutions out there for photographers. We could either pay thousands to have someone custom build one for us, we could spend weeks trying to figure out how to customize it ourself in HTML and CSS, and ending up just pulling out all our hair, or we could just put up with the bloated and confusing solutions that existed.

He, and his good friend, Kyle Fox decided to do something about it. And so, in July of 2008, they began working on FotoJournal. The first iteration (0.1) was created, and installed for this blog you are reading right now! It’s fantastic, I’ve been using it for over a year now, and it speeds up my blogging tenfold.

But it wasn’t awesome enough for them. So they kept working, because they really wanted to build something that would revolutionize the way photographers blog. The result, the one that you can now sign up for, is incredible, and I’m actually pretty jealous that I don’t get to use it with this blog, lol!

During this whole time, we would let them know what we liked about FJ, and what features would make our lives even easier. We were loving the product, and really enjoyed the fact that they would seriously listen to what we suggested. But the whole time, it was their baby.

Fast forward to a few months ago. Now that FotoJournal was getting closer and closer to launch, they decided that they would need some help, especially on the customer service side of things. So they asked us if we’d like to become an official part of FotoJournal! We were so honored, and so stoked. FotoJournal has really gotten people talking, especially in the web development world. It’s a very ambitious undertaking, and seriously the first of it’s kind. It’s also meticulously created, and beautifully designed. We’re extremely excited and lucky to get to be a part of it, and can’t wait to see where it goes!

So now, it’s launching today. We’re extremely proud of these two guys, and they deserve all the credit. FotoJournal is awesome because they care so much about making a great product. And we truly believe that they have succeeded!

Well, that’s the story! It’s been a really different experience for us, since we don’t know anything at all about web development, but it’s been incredibly fun, and exciting. We honestly think that FotoJournal will be a game changer. If you don’t believe me, just go and check it out.

Feel free to hit us up if you have any questions about FJ

Wow, it’s been a wonderful few weeks. We’ve had the opportunity to meet with some amazing people who just happen to be photographers as well. The Winners!

March 10, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Well, our contest for the Best Wedding Image of 2009 ended at midnight last night, and I’ve spent the morning counting votes. It was certainly a thrilling race, with nearly 600 different people voting! And that’s all individuals, there was no tricky business allowed. Trust me, we sent those ninja cats out to a couple people. I hear they were terrified, but promised never to cheat in an online contest again….

Anywho, you don’t really care about that. What you care about is who won. And whether or not you got that sweet free portrait session!

Since I’m still missing the Olympics, I gave our top three contestants medals for their bravery and dedication to this contest.

Coming in third place, which was the most hotly contested spot….

April & Sheldon! They get a custom 11x14 print for their effforts! Hip hip hooray!

photo#photo_2868

In second place, with an astounding number of votes, the very romantic Laurie & Joseph! They will also receive an 11x14 custom print! Huzzah!

photo#photo_2870

And in first place, the big kahuna, the ones who swept the competition, with an INSANE number of votes…..

SONAL & RAJ!!! YAYYY!!!!111!!!1!111!!!!!

photo#photo_2869

Now, what’s really cool about these two being the winners is that even if I took out all the votes made by friends, family, and obvious co-workers (I can figure that out when I get a million emails all from employees in the same company ;) they still would have won. The votes that I was most interested in were those made by our own friends, family, past clients, and colleagues. We are very honoured to have our blog frequented by other photographers from around the world, as well as stellar wedding professionals, and were so happy to see them getting in on the voting! Those votes, which were completely unbiased in terms of loyalty, were going most frequently to this image. It was the true winner. It’s romantic, exotic, adventurous and unique: everything you’d like your own wedding to be! Congrats you guys!!! They will receive a gorgeous 16x24 canvas, and I definitely think they should pick this shot ;)

Ok, now, the winner of the free portrait session and 8x10 print is…..

Chelsea Luft!!

I’ll be giving Chelsea a shout to see if she is able to claim her prize. We did get a lot of votes from all over the world, so I don’t know if she’ll ever be in Edmonton! So sit tight, and I’ll announce if the prize is indeed awarded, or if we need to draw again :)

Thanks to everyone for participating, it was super fun! We have a little thank you treat for everyone who played, so check your emails :)

Lots of love!

Lauren & Rob

Contest Ends Tomorrow!

March 8, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Just a reminder that our Best Wedding Image of 2009 Contest is ending tomorrow (March 9) at midnight!

You have one more day to enter yourself to win a free portrait session from Rob & Lauren, and help your favorite image win eternal glory!!!!

Just hit up this post, and vote away!

Remember, only one vote per person. We have our army of ninja cats waiting on standby…..

Coaching by Rob & Lauren

March 4, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Over the past few years we’ve been so honored to be sought out as educators in our wonderful city! We’ve held quite a few Chill Sessions, and had such an amazing time connecting with the wonderful photographers who’ve attended! We also had the thrill of speaking to over 100 photographers at the PPOC Annual NAIT seminar. Though it was so nerve-racking, we were thrilled to hear that we inspired many who attended to kick their business up a notch!

One of our favourite ways to teach, however, have been the one-on-one consults we’ve been holding for interested photographers. It becomes a much more personal experience, with all of our material directed at exactly what that photographer needs. The result is a complete overhaul of how they look at photography, their business, and their art, and they always leave with their mind spinning from new ideas. Thus far these have been held on a rather informal basis, just done when someone specifically asks. However, we’ve come to see these as a very powerful way to help other photographers, and are looking forward to making them a more regular part of our offerings.

We see these consults as the perfect option for anyone interested in photography. We’ve taught people who just invested in their first DSLR and need some help learning how to use it, and people who have run a photography business for years and need some help adapting to the changing market!

There is no better time than right now to shake up your work or your business, as we wait for the spring to come and shooting to start! We personally use the winter to re-evalute everything we do, and it always lets us start the new season with a bang!

So, in honor of this new offering, we are having a couple awesome specials on our consults!! Check the graphic below for those offers!

photo#photo_2867

If you’d like to check out all the details and pricing just hit up our Coaching site: http://www.robandlaurenphotographers.com/coaching/

These offers are good for any consult taking place in March. If you’re interested in booking a consult, drop us a line and we’ll set it up!

We truly love teaching, and are excited to make it a bigger part of our lives as photographers!

Lots of love,

Lauren & Rob :)

Cool News & The Best Contest Ever

February 22, 2010 // Posted by lauren in

Well friends, we have some cool news to share with you today!

First up, we were recently honored with a neat award. It is the Bride’s Choice Award from WeddingWire. Here’s a blurb from them about the award:

photo#photo_2863

The WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards ™ recognizes the top local wedding professionals from the WeddingWire Network that demonstrate excellence in quality, service, responsiveness, and professionalism. Unlike other awards in which winners are selected by the organization, the Bride’s Choice Awards are determined by recent reviews and extensive surveys from over 500,000 newlyweds. This year’s winners represent the top five percent of WeddingWire’s vendor community, which consists of over 100,000 local wedding professionals nationwide.

We were super surprised to see this bad boy waiting for us when we returned home from Peru! Huge thanks to our super duper wonderful special amazing clients who took the time to leave us some wonderful reviews. Even though they always make me cry, in a good way :)

Now, for something way more exciting!! CONTEST!!!

Tomorrow. This will begin. Put it in your daytimer (do people still use those?) or your iCal. Set your alarms. Clear your schedule.

photo#photo_2865

The images will go up tomorrow, and then the vicious competition will begin. This will be WAY more interesting than the Olympics, so get ready. Ok, so it won’t be way more interesting than the Olympics, but it will be fun!

Plus, the rewards won’t only go to the wedding couples, but you. Yes, you! You will have a chance to win a free portrait session and 8x10 custom print from Rob & Lauren just by voting! WOW! No, I’m not joking. This is legit. There’s a banner and everything for it.

See you tomorrow!!

We’re Baaaaaack!

And here’s a quick shot of us that our friend Drew Sinclair took at the end of our trip in Iquitos, the largest city in the world that isn’t accesible by road! It’s deep in the Amazon, and was really a fascinating place with tons of great colours!

photo#photo_2845By this point we were sweaty, our clothes were dirty, and we were exhausted from a full month of high-paced shooting. But as you can hopefully tell, we were very very happy to be there.

Hope you all had a wonderful month!

Our New Portfolios

December 16, 2009 // Posted by lauren in

Well, I’ve been working away at these for a long time now. As I’m sure all photographers know, revamping your portfolio is always way more work than you expect it to be. But it’s always worth it. For us, we have a renewed energy and drive after seeing all that we’ve done in the past year!

It’s not completely finished yet, as I still have to put together a couple more categories, and hopefully get them all linked together, but I wanted to share what I’ve done with you lovely blog readers! For those wondering, I made these portfolios myself! Big thanks to my friend Kyle Fox for his help with some of the CSS stuff!!

First up, our Wedding Portfolio: http://www.robandlaurenphotographers.com/weddingportfolio/

And a couple teaser shots:

And secondly, as many of you know, we took up shooting film this year. Our Film Portfolio is less extensive, but hopefully still interesting! There is a lot of new stuff in there, since we just finished scanning it all!

Note: You will need to scroll sideways to view our portfolio. I know it’s a bit of a hassle, but we find it’s the best way to display both horizontal, vertical, and irregularly sized images!

We’d love to hear your feedback! Hope you enjoy, we’re really excited about where our work is going :)

Help Portrait

December 8, 2009 // Posted by lauren in

This upcoming Saturday photographers from all over the world will be participating in an event called Help Portrait. Quite simply, the purpose is to find people in need, take their portrait, and print it. It’s going to be an amazing way to give back, and show people that they are beautiful.

Here in Edmonton there is a large group participating, with 4 locations around the city. The reason I’m posting about this event is to ask our lovely blog readers to spread the word to people in need. You might know someone who runs a shelter, works with the underprivileged, or could benefit from this themselves. Examples of the people this event was created for are veterans, the elderly, the homeless, single mothers, etc.

If you’d like to see what it’s all about, view this video. I watched it this morning and nearly bawled. I’m really excited to get to participate in such an awesome cause.

Here is a poster with details for the Edmonton event. Please think if you know someone we can help, and spread the word! If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email and I’ll answer them as best I can!

And finally, if you are a photographer, make-up artist, or even just someone who wants to help, I’m sure there is still space for volunteers. This is the link for the Edmonton group where you can offer your help, and get in touch with the organizers: http://community.help-portrait.com/group/edmonton

Thanks in advance for your help! We really hope we can put a smile on a lot of faces this Saturday!
